Every fall we get these most interesting mushrooms.  Always in the same place in the yard.  Not edible (well, I dont know if they are or not, but we arent gonna tempt fate either)

Ok…. a little side note here….. Steve has always wanted to do some mushroom farming.  I have NO idea why.  He has asked me to order various interesting edible mushrooms because they are supposed to be good for cooking.  I think its really because he is interested in all things that grow.  I havent ordered him any.  And dont plan on it.  He will have to buy his own.

ok, so here they are, and my observations.

They start round like a ball on a peg:

then flatten and curl inside out… making a cup shape

eventually showing their ribbed undersides

making interesting shapes

as they shrivel and rot.

You now know ALL I know about mushrooms.  And all I really wanna know!

LOL There is some local guy out here making good money at the farmer’s market because he started mushroom farming. Had a ton of old wood on his property and got an agricultural grant …loan.. whatever and started mushroom farming in his retirement. I’m with you… one wrong judgement and it’s not worth it!

Mushrooms live under the ground most of the time in a “mat” like form. They come up once a year to “mate”. If you don’t want them in the yard any more just pull all the ones that come up and dig up the dirt in that area. You will kill the “mat” that way. Sorry, but my Ecology degree had to give you a simple answer to your mushroom knowledge! LOL….still love your blogs!!

    great pics!

in search for mushroom info, i came across your blog. mushrooms are very interesting organisms and are actually a fruit part of mycelium, which lives under ground. the best part about them is that a lot of time, they live in symbiotic relationship with other organisms and are very beneficial in that relationship. mushrooms have medicinal properties in humans.

please visit to learn or share stories about medicinal mushrooms.
